The new Minister of Interior, Bruno Retailleau has declared that he will prioritize a new immigration bill that will, in simple terms, make France less attractive to immigrants, especially illegal immigrants. His new plan consists of the abrogation of the Aide Médicale d’Etat (AME), repealing birthright citizenship (or “le droit du sol”) and reestablishing the infraction of illegal sojourn (“le délit du séjour irrégulier”). He also wants to execute more OQTFs, the obligation to leave the French territory, (“l’obligation de quitter le territoire français”) as well as make it easier to deport foreigners who have been convicted of criminal activity.
While the French parliament had already adopted a tougher immigration law back in December 2023, the Constitutional Council struck this bill down, deeming parts of it as unconstitutional.
